Glasgow University has risen to 81 in this year's Times World University Rankings - an encouraging increase of 20 places on last year's position of 101. University Principal, Sir Muir Russell, said: "This excellent news reflects the dedication of staff and students who make Glasgow University one of the best in the world, one of only two Scottish universities in the top 100.
The University of Glasgow has one of the largest research bases in the UK, with an annual income from research grants and contracts of over £77M in 2002-03, over 3,400 researchers including academic staff, research staff and research students. The University also has an excellent reputation for the quality of its teaching and it attaches great importance to ensuring that students receive a high quality learning experience. The University of Glasgow's international reputation for research and teaching makes it a rewarding place for study.

Key Features:
- In 2004 the University was awarded the grading of Broad Confidence - the highest expression of satisfaction - by the Scottish Funding Council for its learning and teaching provision. The achievements in subject review built on the University's unique attainment of 16 Excellent and 14 Highly Satisfactory awards in the Teaching Quality Assessments conducted by the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council between 1992-93 and 1997-98.
- The most recent independent survey of research quality, the Research Assessment Exercise of 2001, reported that 96% of the University's research staff were working in subject areas producing research of international quality. Twenty three subject areas received the highest research rating of 5.
- The University is a member of the Russell Group of major research-led universities and a founder member of Universitas 21, an international grouping of universities dedicated to setting world-wide standards for higher education.
